Barbara Schmelzer Bookbinding provides a comprehensive hand bookbinding service, specialising in:

  • fine binding
  • experimental and non-adhesive binding
  • book conservation – including book repair and archival storage requirements like phase boxes, envelope folders and the like
  • portfolios for photographers and graphic designers


Other work includes:

  • binding of limited edition series
  • thesis binding
  • box making
  • guest books
  • logbooks
  • condolence books
  • diaries and all other hand binding requirements


All products are handmade and of excellent quality.

Some of my favourite materials to work and experiment with are contemporary materials like:

  • plexiglass (acrylic)
  • plasticized paper
  • plastic foils and the like


Bookbinding Workshops

Weekend workshops and tuition are offered on a regular basis and are held either at my studio or alternative locations including universities, polytechs, or community centres. Courses can be tailored to the specific needs of clients.

CV and Awards

I studied bookbinding at the Bookbinding College in Stuttgart and became a Master Bookbindinder in Munich, Germany. I have two decades of binding experience , running my own bookbindery first in Wellington, New Zealand and now in Sydney, Australia. To enhance my book conservation skills I attended internships at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Library. My clients include advertising and design companies, photographers and artists, book collectors and dealers, the Research Library at the Australian Museum in Sydney and bibliophiles.

  • Won 1st prize in the JCA Steel Bookbinding Competition organised thought the NSW Guild of Craft Bookbinders, Australia

2008

  • Moved to Sydney and opened my new bindery in Brookvale.

2007

  • Completed my Master Bookbinder in Munich, Germany
